How long do I keep a waste transfer note?

Two years sounds generous until you try to find one note from fourteen months ago, for one job, in a van, on a Tuesday, because an officer has asked for it.

That is really a filing problem rather than a legal one. The duty is easy to state and hard to satisfy, and firms fail it by losing paper rather than by refusing to keep it.

From 1 October 2026 there is a second reason to be able to find one quickly. The site that received the load has logged it digitally, so if your copy and their record disagree, the question comes to you and it comes with a date on it.

Whatever you use, the test is the same. Can you produce the note for a specific job, from over a year ago, while standing in a yard, in under a minute.
